Developing literacy, including across the curriculum
Many colleagues are saying that literacy is a priority in their settings. There tend to be two main reasons:
Wanting all pupils to be able to read, understand and talk about stories, novels, poems and non-fiction and to create their own
Knowing it’s important for pupils to access subjects across the curriculum, and realising that to do this, pupils need to be supported to understand the technical, tier 3 vocabulary, and texts of greater lexical depth and complexity.
Once we know the findings of the research from the impact of ‘Just Reading’ we can’t unknow it:
An impressive 8.5 months progress in reading comprehension, with a surprising 16 months progress for pupils identified as ‘poorer’ readers
There’s a reading deficit and I believe this means we have a moral obligation to do what we can to address it.
In this webinar I go through the headlines of the research and discuss what we can do about the reading deficit, access with a single annual or group subscription.
