How fear of getting things wrong hold pupils back

It’s such a shame when pupils are reluctant to offer their ideas because they are worried about getting something wrong.

In fact, many adults feel the same way! It’s natural to want to preserve our self-esteem in the face of potential embarrassment of not getting something right.

We need to strip away the fear and recognise that making mistakes is part of learning, whether we are adults or children.

When we get it right, it lowers the stakes and helps pupil to relish demanding work.

I’ll be going through the elements of creating high challenge and low threat in our classrooms, with examples for primary and secondary.
