School improvement update
January 2024
Sensible stuff, no quick fixes
Dear colleague
Here are some links that I hope you find helpful:
Big news for primary colleagues!
We are very excited for this! We're launching The Teachers' Collection 2.0 with plenty of lovely resources to support the primary curriculum:
Book suggestions to support the national curriculum
Draft plans and vocabulary lists
The Primary Subject Networks from Myatt & Co
Knowledge Bites: short explainers to help with subject knowledge
The Primary Curriculum Booster course
Monthly check-ins
I'll be doing a webinar Monday 29th Jan 5pm to go through the new platform. The session is free and both live and recorded if you miss it. You can register for the Zoom link and recording here.
We are delighted to be hosting Leading the Diverse Curriculum which has been developed by Hannah Wilson and Bennie Kara, co-founders of Diverse Educators.
I had a great conversation with Bennie and Hannah about their reasons for developing the programme, the benefits of offering a self-paced CPD model with live check-ins and how they support colleagues to dive deep into this important work.
You can watch our conversation here.
I’ll also be speaking at the DiverseEd Cymru conference on Saturday 2nd March 2024 in Newport. The theme is ‘Be where you are celebrated, not tolerated.’
Some insights from Sam Crome about leadership: ‘Personally, I became disillusioned by several leadership courses that obsessed over my role as an individual. What was my leadership style? Which traits to do I have that make me a credible leader? What I really wanted was to know the evidence behind group dynamics.’
‘After all, the group works together to get things done. I wanted to know more about how that can happen to both foster connection and relatedness, but also to aid team effectiveness, team development, team expertise, etc.’
That's why Sam began researching high-performing groups and has written The Power of Teams: How to create and lead thriving school teams and with Lekha Sharma has created an important course for Huh Academy on building great teams in schools.
You can watch my conversation with Lekha and Sam here.
More courses on the curriculum and leaders from the Huh Academy here. They are self-paced with live check-ins.
World of Languages and Languages of the World: WoLLoW
This is a great programme designed to help children to be curious about languages, to understand the links and see the patterns between languages, and to help them to think about how a language works.
WoLLoW have developed an exciting new curriculum aimed at putting joy and fun at the heart of languages teaching for children in KS2 and KS3, they are free to access.
It’s also worth checking out the Primary Languages Network with schemes of work developed by primary specialists and is aligned with the national curriculum programme of study for language learning at the primary. Janet Lloyd has written a blog about primary modern foreign languages and communication skills.
British Science Week 8th-17th March: Resources for all key stages including a secondary activity pack for encouraging secondary students to explore #STEM careers, from transport designer to marine biologist. Resources for all key stages are free to access.
If you are a PSHE lead and are looking to develop your leadership of this important area of education, Malarvilie Krishnasamy offers an accredited Level 5 Institute of Leadership course. The programme will equip school leaders with the knowledge, skills, and strategies needed to effectively lead PSHE education. This course is eligible for funding through the Primary PE & Sports Premium. The course content explicitly addresses the link between physical health and its positive impact on mental and emotional well-being. Specifically, this alignment falls under Core Unit 1: Compulsory Health Education. You can download the brochure here.
Some great courses from Adam Boxer
