Support for SEND, the impact of ‘just reading’ and sensible assessment at KS3

Pupils with SEND, enjoy doing demanding work! In three webinars I draw on the research to show how it’s possible to introduce all young people, regardless of their barriers to learning in geography, history and RE.

The impact of ‘Simply reading challenging novels aloud, and at a fast pace in each lesson, repositioned ‘poorer’ readers as ‘good’ readers, giving them a more engaged, uninterrupted reading experience over a sustained period.’

Who, in education, wouldn’t love to have results like these?

This is what happened with the ‘Just read’ research project from the University of Sussex. I discuss the findings from ‘Just reading’: the impact of a faster pace of reading narratives on the comprehension of poorer adolescent readers in the webinar ‘The reading deficit and what can be done about it’.

And in two sessions on assessment at KS3, I explore the challenges and opportunities and argue that numbers and data have their limits. You can watch the first one here and the second one here.
