The Tyranny of Metrics
Hello colleague
A great book by Jerry Muller, which helps us gather some sensible perspectives about what can and can’t be gleaned from numbers.
It’s important when we are making judgements about whether our pupils have learnt what’s been taught.
If we aren’t careful, we believe that information is more certain and authoritative than is actually the case: ‘the caveats, the ambiguities, and uncertainties are peeled away, and nothing does more to create the appearance of certain knowledge than expressing it in numerical form.’
I work through the challenges and opportunities of assessment at Key Stage 3 and show how it’s possible to draw insights on whether students are making progress through the curriculum.
Available with a Myatt & Co annual or group subscription.
If you or your school don’t already have an annual subscription, it’s easy to subscribe and you get access to the popular subject networks and ongoing professional development.
Until next time
